Watch Missing food -- the case of post-harvest grain losses in sub-Saharan Africa Video Missing food -- the case of post-harvest grain losses in sub-Saharan Africa
Dec 07, 2011
This video was released upon the launching of the new FAO/World Bank report Missing Food: The Case of Postharvest Grain Losses in Sub-Saharan Africa. As in the report (produced in collaboration with the UK's Natural Resources Institute) the video makes the case that investing in post-harvest technologies to reduce food losses could significantly address food security concerns in sub-Saharan Africa through increasing food availabilities and reducing pressure on food prices and land and water resources. It highlights the high levels of post-harvest grain losses in sub-Saharan Africa underscoring that these losses: are worth around $4 billion a year; could meet the minimum annual food requirements of at least 48 million people; and are roughly equivalent to the value of annual cereal imports in the region. The video then presents a variety of practices and technologies which are available for reducing post-harvest losses, and identifies conditions for their successful application. © FAO www.fao.org

NetworkNewsToday: 12 January 2009 - - World Bank: Malawi - Although a fertile country, Malawi is prone to drought and disease. Its farmers live under the constant threat of crop failure and food insecurity. From irrigation systems to getting produce to market, the country's agricultural system is now being overhauled. The new irrigation system is a cause for celebration in Malawi's Kanyelae village. Over 80 percent of Malawis people are smallholder farmers. Agriculture is the main source of income for the country, making up nearly 90 percent of Malawis exports. SOUNDBITE (Chichewa) Alistariko Samisoa, Headman, Kanyela Village, Salima District: We started this irrigation scheme to improve our yield. The food we were producing from rain-fed fields was inadequate The government, with help from the World Bank is investing in affordable irrigation systems and offering farmers technical advice and marketing support. SOUNDBITE (English) Patrick Kabambe, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government: We need to tackle the problems of the inconsistent rainfall patterns and the solution was through irrigation development, but secondly it was to address the problem of imports; that is why the government came up with a subsidy program. Through local farmer based organizations like "A Farmers Fund" in Chisomo, farmers have been encouraged to work collectively and to plan in advance. "A Farmers Fund" has been set up by the government to help expand basic food production and develop ...

Mukandori Consalate—a beneficiary of Help Channel's food for work reforestation project in Burundi—discusses the success of the project's simultaneous focus on hunger alleviation and environmental restoration. Mukandori has a borderline food consumption score and said that in order to cope with hunger she has resorted to consuming seeds, sending her children to beg for food, and reducing the number of meals she eats per day. She does not own any livestock, though she views livestock ownership as one of the most important elements of long-term food security; she worked 28 days in the project. The project was supported by the Canadian Food Grain Bank and Mennonite Central Committee. This video was recorded using a mobile data collection tool called EthnoCorder (www.ethnocorder.com).
